Locke and Hobbes and Rouseau Classical Liberal social contract theorists. Social contract theory, nearly as old as philosophy itself, is the view that persons’ moral and/or political obligations are dependent upon a contract or agreement among them to form the society in which they live.
These philosophers were also natural law theorists, Natural law or the law of nature (Latin: lex naturalis) has been described as a law whose content is set by nature and is thus universal. Natural law is a view that certain rights or values are inherent in or universally cognizable by virtue of human reason or human nature, but there the resemblance ends.
